Barn Hives

Three off-grid pods on a vineyard above Smiths Beach, in the Margaret River cape country at Yallingup. Raminta and Egidijus Rusilas built them hive-shaped and industrial — solar to a heat pump for hot water, rainwater to the tap, a pellet fire for the cold — and run the sustainability seriously enough to hold Ecotourism Australia's ECO Certification, which most stays trading on the word "eco" don't. The name comes from the bee hives kept around the property, and the honey is theirs. Adults only, a few minutes from the beach and central to the cape's wineries.

Bina Maya Yallingup Escape

Three accommodations on a 7-acre forest property at Quedjinup, between Yallingup and Dunsborough — Luxury Villa One and Villa Two for couples or four guests each, and The Residence for eight across four bedrooms. Built 2018 and 2022 by WA architect Adrian Zorzi. Villa Two has an outdoor bath. Each is elevated for treehouse-style canopy views; kangaroos pass through morning and evening. Sara and Tim host. Full kitchens for self-catering, plus optional in-house massage, yoga, sound bowls, breakfast boxes and private chef degustations through Tiller Dining. Yallingup Woodfired Bakery is ten minutes by car; Margaret River wineries are close.

Burnside Organic Farm

Jamie and Lara McCall have farmed this Margaret River block organically since 1997 — Demeter biodynamic certification from the year they planted the first vines. Two private bungalows sit in remnant bush above the vineyard and grazing paddocks: a one-bedroom rammed-earth with a stone bath, and a two-bedroom limestone with an outdoor stone bath. Guests get self-guided agritourism walks, market garden tours, and tastings of the estate wines and capers. Jamie was a tall-ship sailor and pearl diver before farming. The three adult children are now coming back to the property.

Cape Lodge

Forty acres of parkland and a private eight-acre vineyard in Yallingup, with 22 rooms and a restaurant that draws serious attention for its kitchen-garden-to-table seasonal menus. Vasse Felix, Moss Wood, Pierro and Cullen are all nearby. The kind of place where the programme — pool, tennis, walking trails, wine country — makes it difficult to leave.

Caves House Hotel

Built in 1903 by the WA Government to house visitors to the newly opened Ngilgi Cave, burnt down twice in 1928 and 1929, and rebuilt in art deco in 1938 by the same Busselton builder who put up the original. Bob and Hazel Hawke honeymooned here in 1956. Neil and Libby Jilley spent the past decade reopening rooms that had been closed for years — the Yallingup Room, the Ngilgi Room, the Meelup Room — and refurnishing the heritage rooms, apartments and homestead. Live music seven days a week. Heritage façade and gardens listed.

Forest Rise Chalets & Lodge

A 240-acre private estate at Yelverton, north of Margaret River township, where Deb and Benson run a handful of self-contained chalets — one and two-bedroom spa chalets, plus a larger lodge — spread across the property for privacy. ECO Certified Ecotourism accreditation through Ecotourism Australia. Kangaroos in numbers, native birdlife, and as of 2023, the first WA property to install Smappee intelligent EV chargers. There's an in-house chef, yoga, and spa treatments available on site.

Island Brook Estate Vineyard and Chalets

A working Margaret River vineyard with three chalets and a residence in the jarrah forest, named for the wines they produce — Cabernet, Semillon, Chardonnay. The estate runs an active conservation programme for the threatened red-tailed phascogale, which still nests on the property. Cellar door Friday to Sunday. Pet-friendly accommodation isn't advertised; weddings are. About fifteen minutes from Margaret River township in the heart of the wine country.

Jarrah Grove Forest Retreat

Sam and Lee run two rammed-earth chalets on 86 acres of Jarrah, Marri and Karri forest at Rosa Glen, fifteen minutes south of Margaret River. Adults only and genuinely dog-friendly — they built the place specifically because they couldn't find pet-friendly stays with the standard of finish they wanted on their own travels. The forest hosts more than 160 wildflower species including rare orchids. Two chalets is the whole property; book one and you've got the bush track network and the silence to yourselves.

Olio Bello

Eight thousand olive trees on 320 certified organic acres, pressed on-site using a Pieralisi mill imported from Italy. The oil runs straight from press to bottle, unfiltered. Stay in lakeside glamping bungalows, eat at the Mediterranean café, or work through the tasting room's single-varietal range — Kalamata, Arbequina, Koroneiki — while the farm does its slow, unglamorous work around you.

Yallingup Glamping Retreat

A multi-product retreat at 40 Hemsley Road, Yallingup — five wine-named spa suites (Verdelho, Chablis, Chardonnay, Semillon and Shiraz), two of them treetop king-bed suites elevated into the canopy, plus a pet-friendly suite and a single glamping tent under pine trees in the orchard. The Om Day Spa is on-site and bookable for retreat guests. All guests have access to the 25-metre pool, BBQ, and a guest lounge with stone fireplace, vinyl collection, and books. Optional a la carte breakfast service. Margaret River wineries close by.
