Boutique Hotel
The Old Victoria
Newcastle, NSW
The Story
Built in 1837, this hotel takes its architectural cues from the Georgian era that shaped early Australian building, with symmetrical proportions, 13-foot ceilings, still-in-use open fireplaces, a drawing room, and a wide entry hall leading to the staircase. The upstairs accommodation has been refurbished in period style, with rooms named the Victoria, the Albert, the Musician's, the Poet's and the Seamstress's. Downstairs, Duke's Restaurant and Bar and a courtyard handle dining and events. Its most recent restoration returned the building to its original purpose as a hotel, at 9 Day Street, East Maitland.
