Alpine Retreat Hotel

Rachael and Anthony Northwood have run this heritage-listed 1885 hotel on the Warburton Highway, above the Yarra River, since 2021. Built as a waypoint into the upper Yarra Valley and expanded by the Leith family, it holds 32 rooms — river-view among them — and six dining spaces working seasonal produce under chef James. Good Food wrote up the kitchen in 2026; live music runs most weekends, with the Warburton Rail Trail at the door.

Three self-contained cottages set in a garden in Sassafras, one of the mountain villages of the Dandenong Ranges east of Melbourne. Each is taken privately and has a spa, and the appeal is seclusion within an established garden rather than a resort's shared facilities. Sassafras sits among the tall mountain ash and fern gullies of the ranges, with the village's tea rooms, galleries and surrounding forest walks close by. The scale is deliberately small, owner-run with only a handful of cottages, so it reads as a quiet couples' retreat rather than group accommodation. It suits a weekend within easy reach of the city but firmly in the hills, with the cool-climate gardens of the Dandenongs a short drive in any direction.

In the Yarra Valley wine country, this is an off-grid tiny house from Shacky, part of a small Victorian collection of solar-powered cabins built for disconnecting. Set on farmland among the region's vineyards and paddocks, the one-bedroom cabin runs off-grid on solar, swapping the everyday for quiet, sustainable living and big country views. It's a deliberately simple escape — a compact, well-considered hideaway where nature takes centre stage. Rates run from around $299 a night, with the valley's cellar doors and produce a short drive away.
